What Is This Book For

A leatherbound notebook titled "Notes by Nobody" in an empty shelf with a sunset through a window in the background.
Welcome to my notebook

A place for my thoughts that is not my head and not everyone else's ears

I, like most others I think, was told that having a diary or journal was a good idea when I was a child. Even then I found the idea a bit silly. As a thirteen- or fourteen-year-old I thought that I didn’t really have any interest in reading about my own activities during a random Wednesday as recently as last week, let alone a year or a decade later, and so the suggestion faded away.

As I grew older, I started to realize that while I still had no interest in remembering individual personal events, I often would have thoughts that would fill my head for long periods of time. I was afraid to tell my friends out of worry that I would bore them, my family had more important things to do, and talking to myself often would allow me to refine my thoughts but would not allow those thoughts to escape from my head. These thoughts or opinions ranged in topic from philosophy & politics to economics & religion, with the vast majority not being of interest to… the vast majority of people outside of myself.

I suppose then, the purpose of this “book” is twofold. Firstly, allow a place where my thoughts can escape that does not bother those without interest but allows me to develop them more fully (justifying the accessibility of past versions of articles if any exist). Secondly, while I understand the vast majority will have no interest in almost anything in these pages, my hope is that some day; whether during my life or after, somebody in some place may find one of these notes worthwhile or useful to them. If someone does ever read this, the first of those purposes is already going smoothly, you might be the fulfillment of the second.

Given my writing style and personality, I can tell you that these articles will almost certainly be verbose, likely boring to most people, and possibly quite wrong. Fortunately, it seems that most people are possibly verbose, boring, and wrong about at least some things, and so my hope is that you will forgive those descriptors in my writing when they do occur.

Thank you.
